The multicultural and multidisciplinary workshop, held in China from October 20 to October 31, brought together 46 students and 10 instructors from 13 institutions from the CUPEUM international scientific cooperation network. Participants came from Quebec, China, the Republic of Korea, Tunisia, Italy, Syria, Lebanon and Morocco. The teams had to propose working plans – landscape projects – for the development and enhancement of Jinze, a water town in the suburban area in the province of Shanghai. Jinze is crisscrossed by a canal system, lakes, wetland environments and its local morphology and urban architecture are marked by a deeply rural character typical of the many water towns in the region. Issues identified by local managers for the students to develop viable projects for the town included rehabilitation of the historical neighbourhoods and their agricultural interfaces, preservation of water resources and wetlands and the viable development of the local economy.

After 10 days of intensive work, the 12 landscape projects were reviewed by an international jury chaired by UNESCO. The School of Landscape Architecture students who received awards are:

  • Katherine Jarno and her team, First Prize for their Commercial Network project
  • Karoline Davignon and her team, Second Prize for their Necklace of Pearls project
  • Anne Aubin and her team for their, Third Prize Urban Reflection for Connection project

All WAT_Jinze projects were donated to the district of Qingpu. They were also exhibited at the fourth World Urban Forum (WUF4) in Nanjing, China.
