Institution ranked by Times Higher Education and Jiao Tong University in Shanghai

Two international ranking have listed the Université de Montréal among the best universities in the world once again. The Times Higher Education ranked the Université de Montréal among the 100 best universities in the world, while the Jiao Tong University in Shanghai lists the UdeM in its group of 100 to 150 best universities.

The Université de Montréal was the sole French university from the Americas to be included in the famed Times Higher Education ranking. What’s more, the Université de Montréal took 91st place – two notches above its 2007 placement. As for the Shanghai list, the increase is greater with the UdeM rising from 151st place to 133rd this year.

“These rankings confirm that Université de Montréal as one of the world’s premier universities,” says UdeM Rector Luc Vinet. “In spite of their shortcomings, international rankings provide compelling snapshots of institutions dedicated to higher education. Having been ranked and recognized by its peers, the UdeM stands out from some 8,600 universities around the world for its excellence in teaching and research. Being lauded as one of the world’s best universities is a distinction our 56,000 students, 260,000 alumni, 10,000 faculty and staff can celebrate.”

Montreal was also among an elite group of metropolises, not to mention the sole Canadian city, with two institutions ranked in the Times Higher Education Supplement. This achievement strengthens Montreal’s position as a magnet for graduate studies (Master’s and PhD) and one of the world’s most dynamic cities. Indeed, Montreal’s high concentration of knowledge helps advance the City’s economy and carve its place as the R&D capital of Canada.

“Each of us, in our varying fields of expertise, has played a role in enhancing the reputation and rankings of the Université de Montréal, which benefits all members of our community,” concludes Luc Vinet. “I take this opportunity to thank all professors, researchers, employees and students for their contribution to UdeM’s sustained excellence.”
